Many sports fans are familiar with the quip, “Last night I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out.” Well, in early May, I went to a technology conference, and a patient safety meeting broke out. I didn’t expect the conference to be run-of-the-mill; the unSummit, by its name, signals that it offers an alternative conference experience and claims to offer high-quality, practical advice. I was surprised, however, by the degree to which patient safety principles infused the entire program.

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2009--The TerraPharma Project, LLC, a peer-to-peer patient safety advocacy organization, announced today that it will host a newly-formed barcode point-of-care (BPOC) advisory board during The unSUMMIT for Bedside Barcoding to be held May 6-8, 2009, in Tampa, Fla. The advisory board, comprised of five distinguished experts, will identify and disseminate known best practices for hospitals using barcode verification systems at the point of care to enhance the safety and accuracy of medication administration. BPOC systems are currently used in one-quarter of U.S. hospitals to assist caregivers in verifying the five rights of medication administration (right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time), as well as accurately matching patients to blood products, laboratory specimens and mothers' milk.

Rockville,Md.,March 16, 2009 —Recognizing his efforts to reduce preventable medication errors and improve patient safety through adoption of barcode technology, The TerraPharma Project named John Santell, R.Ph., F.A.S.H.P., of the U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention, winner of the 2009 Way-Paver Award. The TerraPharma Project, a peer-to-peer patient safety advocacy organization, has honored individuals and institutions whose actions have helped accelerate the widespread adoption of barcode point-of-care (BPOC) systems in America’s hospitals since 2006 through these awards.
