Barcode point-of-care (BPOC) systems have been in use for 20 years yet fewer than 25% of hospitals are using this critical safety measure for medication administration. Hospitals cite numerous legitimate reasons for the lack of adoption including budget constraints, competing IT priorities, and the lack of unit dose barcoded drug packages. Yet too often hospitals cite unfounded reasons: technology unreadiness, a fear that BPOC will be replaced with RFID soon, nurse resistance, and a belief that the solutions are too costly and labor intensive. The TerraPharma Project formed to bring clarity to the real and imagined obstacles of BPOC. But we do not ask you to take our word for it. The unSUMMIT and the PointofCareForum online community are merely vehicles for peer-to-peer knowledge sharing.
